One of our favorite "whiskey drinker's whiskeys" is Wathen's Barrel Proof from the Medley Distillery. It's a little secret of the bourbon insider world that isn't super well known or terribly expensive, but always hits the spot. Beastly cask strength single barrels that aren't super allocated and can occasionally be found on the shelf for under $100 are a rare thing these days and always a welcome surprise. So when Sam Medley announced that he was launching a new line of private barrels under the "Medley Exclusive Selection" label, we made sure we were first on the list.

We tasted a dozen casks of eight year Kentucky Bourbon. We would have bought a bunch of them, but alas these barrels are very limited and so we were only allowed one. There was an obvious stand-out, so the choice wasn't difficult. Our beast was a great mix of sweets and richness. It's got a nice round nose with cinammon, nutmeg, vanilla, caramel, and wedding cake. The mouthfeel is oaky and rather punchy. And the finish is well-rounded and woody without being over-oaked. All in it's a sweet baking-spice profile which drinks incredibly smooth for its big-baller 125.9 proof!

We learned two things about Sam as we spent a few hours nosing and tasting his lovely whiskeys. 1) Sam is a trivia nut, like a serious competition-worthy trivia nut, and has always dreamed of being on Jeopardy. And 2) Sam's favorite band is Air Supply. Go figure... Anyway we thought it would be a fitting tribute to name this one "Who Is Air Supply?" in honor of Sam's two favorite things.
