First up for our holiday double-header is a very delicious and unique treat. We tasted this whiskey in the summer and wanted to save it for a special Yule-Tide treat!

It's a 14-year light whiskey from MGP. What does that mean? Light whiskey is similar to bourbon except it can have a higher corn content, can be distilled and barreled at a higher proof, and can be aged in a used or uncharred barrel. This is the first light whiskey that we've brought to you. Light whiskey can be quite lovely, and can be found at a more reasonable price point for its age than bourbon ($84 for a 14 year!). However, well, light whiskey can be a little... light. Not this bad boy. The smart folks at Cat's Eye took this well-aged light whiskey and finished it in port barrels. So it's all beautiful and dark and has a wonderful mix of flavors from the intermixing of the strong whiskey and sweet port. It just screams "Holiday Season" so we thought it was just the perfect thing for our celebratory release.

The first thing you'll notice is the lovely deep red copper hue. It's got a lot of sunset vibes with burnt orange going into a dark crimson. Let the nose open up for a few minutes (good advice for any high proof beast like this) and you'll get a wild melange of sweet corn, red berries, almost like vanilla soft serve ice cream dipped in one of those cherry hard shells. The palate is totally unique with big flavors coming together, Jolly Ranchers, orange zest, heavy cream, hints of cake batter, chocolate-covered cherries, grapes, coconuts... The perfect thing for a holiday desert pour, it's sweet but also a serious beast of a whiskey. At 131 proof, the finish is super long and starts to mingle back into the traditional high-corn bourbon arena. Butter and corn mix with charred oak on the back of the tongue, while those wispy notes of fruit and candy evaporate and leave you with something remarkably, dangerously, drinkable.

What a cool creation and perfect treat for the holidays. The sweet notes will go great with whatever's for dessert after your xmas/hanukah feast, and the massive proof will make quarantining with those in-laws a breeze!
