Old Forester was one of our first loves in the bourbon world. There was something about their Birthday Bourbon that seemed so special. It was the first limited release bourbon that sent folks to the stores every year waiting for it to come out. Since those days Forester has released a litany of great hooch from their 1920 Prohibition Bourbon to the 1870 Bottled in Bond, to their new edition, the delicious 100 proof rye. However we always wondered, if this stuff tastes so good at 90-100 proof, what would a cask strength version taste like?

Well, years later, when we heard they had single casks available at cask strength, we sure as shit grabbed one up. And it is fan-fucking-tastic. The full-proof version is so full-flavored and chewy, the mouthfeel is just off the charts. Check out our pod with Tyler for a peek into Forester's production methods. Spoiler, they heat-cycle their rickhouses, which imparts a ton of interaction with the oak and results in super dark, sweet, chewy results. Serious we've heard about other technical gobbely-gook in the bourbon work and we're always skeptical, but there's no arguing with this. It's just an obvious difference.

This barrel, #5298, is a beautiful beast of a bourbon. Distilled July 14th 2016, aged in Warehouse I, 2nd Floor. Over 130 proof, but it's super smooth, fresh, & clean. The most immediate impression is the mouthfeel which is super chewy and oily. The huge flavor is there, but it's a dangerous drinker in that theres little burn and it's super warm and sweet. The nose has big chocolate milk notes going on. Creamy and rich with vanilla and cocoa and lots of sweet candy bar. Then it moves into some stone fruits - ripe peaches, plums - and some big black cherry. The palate goes to Snicker Bar, peanuts and caramel and chocolate and a hint of salt. Super flavorful. The finish is extremely long with punch but no burn, lots of oak and char with continuing creaminess, cocoa, and finally some spice mixing in at the end, little pops of pepper and mescuite. This one is a stunner!
