This tiger really is the king. At least he really fills out those acid washed jeans nicely, and his mullet-mane doesn't hurt either!

You may have heard of Lexington Brewing & Distilling from their delicious Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale. Back in 2012 they joined the distilling game as well and have been patiently aging some incredible barrels. Well at this point they have reached seven years on their hand-crafted bourbon, and it's a stunner. Master Distiller Marc Coffman uses a high-corn mash bill (72/13/15), full-sized new charred oak barrels of course, and they produce and age everything in Lexington, KY.

If you know how bourbon is made, it's basically distilled beer. You create a mash of corn, barley, rye, wheat, etc, ferment it, and then distill it. So if you're already a brewer, you've got several of those steps already down. Marc and the folks at Town Branch decided to pot still their bourbon in the style of Irish Whiskey rather than the standard column stills used by most big American distilleries.

The result is a very solid, but also very unique bourbon. It's got a lot of oil and legs, but also some great fruity notes mixing in with the wood and the warmth. The nose has all the good vanilla, charred oak, cream, and caramel that's typically in a nice bourbon aroma, but then there's fresh green apples, apricots, melons, cherries, peaches, all kinds of lovely fruits mixing in (just to be clear this isn't a flavored whiskey or anything, it's straight bourbon but these are just flavor components that naturally find their way in). The palate is really clean and lively, mixing in the traditional bourbon elements with these fresh fruity and bright colors. The finish pulls everything together, warm with little burn and a satisfying length. Cask strength at 107.5 is perfect with very little burn and a ton of flavor!

We really like everything about Town Branch. It's a small distillery making their own juice, but pulling off what few others can do: a well-aged spirit at a good price that holds its weight against the big boys. Bravo Town Branch! This is a special barrel and hopefully the first of many that we'll offer!
